Apollo CT is part of a local cycle club league that comprises the following clubs, Orchard CC, Island Wheelers and Clann Eireann CC. The inter club league runs between April and August each year and covers 5 and 10 mile time trials and circuit races. The races split between the clubs at the start of the season and then each one is organised by one of the 4 clubs. As the league progresses, participants can gather points by being placed. These points lead to prizes at the end of the season in the annual ICL prize giving night.
Apollo members are also involved in Open racing. Open races are held by clubs throughout the country and entrants must hold an open racing license with either Cycling Ireland or Cycling Ulster in order to race. Points are awarded to individuals for finishing within the top 10 of each race. These open races are broken down into 4 categories of riders, from Cat 4 – beginners to the world of open racing, all the way to Cat 1 – The semi professional cyclist. Every rider beings in Cat 4 and with the accumulation of points you work your way through the categories.
Another aspect of cycling that is flourishing at present, and is well supported by the club, is the “Sportive”. These are events where it is not the winning that counts, but the taking part! Events are held throughout Ireland, with more well known ones such as the “Wicklow 200”, “Lap the Lough”, “Giants Causeway Coastal” to name but a few. Each Sportive is well organised, with food stops, medical cover and in some cases a goody bag on completion of the challenge. An entry fee is to be expected with a percentage of the proceeds generally going to the hosts chosen charity.
